RSS Feeds – How To

What is RSS?
RSS is an abbreviation for “Really Simple Syndication”. It is a way to rapidly distribute web content to a wide number of people.
What problem does RSS solve?
Most people are interested in many websites whose content changes on an unpredictable schedule. Examples of such websites are news sites, community information pages, product information pages, technical websites, and weblogs. Repeatedly checking each website to see if there is any new content can be very tedious.
Simply stated, RSS feeds can bring the news you want to you instead of you having to go out and visit a bunch of web sites. Let your computer automate the task of gathering up the things that interest you, and present them to you all in one place. That’s what RSS feeds do.
Here is a very cool video of the how and why of RSS feeds. (You’ll love the non tech way this is presented.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klgLsSxGsU
How do I use RSS?
You be the first to know about new ProSecurityNews articles without stopping by the website all the time. At the ProSecurityNews website, you can subscribe to new posts (entries) and to comments about entries. There are two methods;
1. There is a “Subscribe” heading to the right side of the page. Click the link to subscribe to “entries” and select your feed reader from the choices provided.
2. If you use a feed reader other than those presented on the page, (such as Thunderbird) then simply copy the link at the top of the page and paste it into the program you are using. The link looks like this. http://lsieducation.com/blog/feed/
Some email programs such as Thunderbird have RSS feed subscription functionality built in. Since you check your email regularly anyway, this adds the equivalent of another in-box and shows any unread articles. Just follow the RSS instructions for your particular program.
Via email.
Suppose you’d rather have the RSS feeds in your IN-BOX where you can apply rules to filter and sort them into folders? Here are 2 free websites that offer this service. You tell them the RSS feeds you want and they grab them and email them to you!
Explore RSS feeds. You may find that many websites you visit have feeds. A reader is how you can get them all to appear on one page for viewing and you don’t have to navigate to a bunch of websites.
